Types of Toyota Keys We Replace and Program
Older Toyota models — roughly pre-2000 — used a straightforward metal blade key with no electronic component. These are the fastest to duplicate, but even they require precision cutting to avoid ignition damage. Most Toyotas from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s use a transponder key: the key blade contains a small chip that must be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer system. If the chip is missing or unprogrammed, the engine will crank but refuse to start. We carry a wide inventory of Toyota-compatible transponder blanks and program them on-site using professional-grade equipment, so you get a fully functional key in a single visit.
More recent Toyota models — including most RAV4, Camry, and Highlander trims from the 2010s onward — use a remote head key or a proximity smart key. The Toyota Smart Key system allows you to unlock doors and start the engine without ever removing the fob from your pocket. If your smart key is lost, damaged, or the battery replacement did not solve the problem, the entire unit typically needs to be replaced and synchronized to your vehicle's ECU. We stock OEM-compatible smart key shells and fobs and program them using the same diagnostic tools your dealer uses, right in your driveway or parking lot.
