BMW Key Types We Replace and Program
BMW has used several distinct key technologies across its model lineup, and knowing which one your vehicle uses matters enormously for a successful replacement. Older BMW models (roughly pre-2000) used a standard laser-cut or double-sided blade that still required a basic transponder chip for engine immobilizer communication. From there, BMW moved to the iconic comfort key fob with a fold-out blade, followed by the Advanced Car Key (also called the Remote Comfort Key) used throughout the 2000s and early 2010s on 3 Series, 5 Series, X5, and many other models. Later vehicles use a full Comfort Access smart key that allows push-button start and proximity unlocking without removing the key from your pocket. BMW's most recent addition is the Display Key — a small, card-sized remote with a color touchscreen that can show fuel level, range, and even allow you to park the car remotely.
We service all of these types: standard transponder keys, remote head keys, comfort access smart keys, and Display Keys. We also handle BMW's digital key setup guidance for compatible smartphones. Each generation requires different cutting equipment and programming protocols, which is why a general-purpose locksmith or a hardware store duplicate won't work — and why our investment in BMW-specific tooling lets us handle what others can't.
